Home Builders’ BLitz

In 2008, HFHI-US challenged all affiliates to have a Home Builders’ Blitz – in which the entire house would be completed and ready for occupancy in one week. This was to be done in partnership with members of the building community. One builder in Ridgecrest took up the challenge, Chuck Cordell of Cordell Construction. Working with a team made up of Cordell Construction and HFHIWV volunteers, planning took place during the early months of the year. In June, in less than the planned 7 days, our partners under the leadership of Chuck Cordell completed the house. Habitat for Humanity IWV and the family of Becky Bachinski, whose family received this house, sincerely thank the following contributors who gave of their talents and time to the success of this incredible accomplishment--a home built in 7 days.

Home Builders' Blitz May 31-June 7, 2008
Thank you to Chuck Cordell of Cordell Construction Co. and the many professional hands and hearts who are giving so generously of their time and talent to make home ownership a reality for the family of Rebecca Bachinski. See "What Habitat Means to Me" by 11-year-old award-winning Logan Bachinski.

Day 1, May 31, 2008:
Becky's house has been framed, trusses set, roof sheathing completed. the rough-in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing were completed day 2. We are well on our way to completing a house in 8 days.

Day 2, June 1, 2008:
The rough-in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing are complete.

Day 3, June 2, 2008:
We passed our rough-in inspections at about 7:30 a.m. and the insulators completed their work by noon. After lunch, three wallboard companies brought crews in and hung essentially all of the drywall by 5 p.m. There is about one hour of drywall work left. Taping and mudding began as rooms were completed.

Day 4, June 3, 2008:
The garage door was installed, most of the roofing is in place; taping, mudding, texturing are completed; floor tiles in the bathrooms and kitchens are being completed as this is being written.

Day 5, June 4, 2008:
Today's focus was on finish carpentry and stucco. We hung all of the doors and installed all the cabinets. The first coat of stucco was applied. We also installed the window sills, most of the door casings, and about a third of the baseboard. Today's 40 mph winds made for miserable working conditions for those having to deal with the outside elements.

Day 6, June 5, 2008:
We installed the laundry room bifold doors, door casings, baseboards, vanity cabinets, sinks, and toilets. We installed a water heater and the finish mechanical items, such as registers and Updux. Doorknobs were put in place throughout the house. We caulked, painted the prime coat, and the finish coat. We were able to finish the painting today thanks to the assistance of the professional painters. The backyard was leveled. Yesterday's bad winds subsided today, and we were able to spray paint the eaves. The electricians completed most of the finish electrical items, such as fans, lights, switches, and receptacles. Finally we cleaned up, and cleaned up, and cleaned up!

Day 7, June 6, 2008:
The color coat was applied to the stucco. Appliances, countertop were installed. The yard was landscaped, the carpet laid, touchup painting done, cleanup done on windows. Cooler and furnace installed. We declared the house complete upon carpet installation!
